Roger That! (Sing to the tune of American Pie)

Not long a while ago, we can still remember

How THAT tennis used to make us smile

And we knew if he had his chance

He could make us all dance

And maybe we’d be happy forever!

But September made us feel wretched

With every clip we rewatched

Bad news on each link

We could not even sleep a wink

We do remember that we felt amiss

When we thought about the widowed tennis

And something killed us deep inside

The day tennis died

So bye-bye  dear gem of a guy

Rode our bike to Basel

Where we saw a crying Nadal

We, good old boys, were singing along

Singing, this is the end of it all

This is the end of it all

Did you write the Book of drops?

And who can face your return of serve

If even Mr. Borg says so

Do you believe in all those line calls?

Can you still serve us, mortal souls?

And can you teach us how to play real slow?

Well you know that we are in love with you

'Cause you saw us standing in the queue

You pulled those shots out of blue

And we stood with our jaws askew

We were the lucky canines in total awe

Watching your every muscle and sinew

But we knew we were out of luck

The day the tennis died

We started singing

Bye-bye  dear gem of a guy

Rode our bike to Basel

Where we saw a crying Nadal

We, good old boys, were singing along

Singing, this is the end of it all

This is the end of it all

Now for ten years, we will be on our own

Watching just Matteo and Cameron

But how can that ever be

Most clairvoyants were the King and Queen

They knew what was coming soon

And took leave from the barren scene.

Oh and while the King was looking down

The Queen was just on the way up

The nations stood stunned

They lost a queen and now another King!

And while Nick read a book on sport

The rest had practiced on the court

And we sang eulogies in parts

The day the tennis died

We were singing

Bye-bye  dear gem of a guy

Rode our bike to Basel

Where we saw a crying Nadal

We, good old boys, were singing along

Singing, this is the end of it all

This is the end of it all

Melbourne New York Paris & London

Will now happen weighing a ton

Frequently barren and fading fast

The players will try to play on grass

And aim for that elusive class

With the King on the sidelines seeing it pass

Now the O2 arena was cast in dark

Glowing in the embers of a dying spark

We all got up to dance

Oh, but we never got the chance

Now all of the players try to put on a show

But the fading giant still shines in his glow

And did we realize what was revealed

The day the tennis died?

We started singing

Bye-bye  dear gem of a guy

Rode our bike to Basel

Where we saw a crying Nadal

We, good old boys, were singing along

Singing, this is the end of it all

This is the end of it all

Oh, and then we were all over the place

An era that faded into space

With no chance for the like of it ever again

So come on, Nick be quick, Nole be fast

Carlos and Stefanos cruising past

'Cause old reels are our only friend

Oh, and as we watched him leave the stage

Our hands were clenched in fists of rage

No Nadal nor Gasper

Could help us ever recover!

And as the fans kept crying through the night

To try to light the darkest with all their might

We saw Satan laughing with delight

The day the tennis died

He was singing

Bye-bye  dear gem of a guy

Rode my bike to Basel

Where I saw a crying Nadal

We, good old boys, were singing along

Singing, this is the end of it all

This is the end of it all

We met Mirka doing her chores

And we begged her for some happy news

But she just smiled and turned away

We went down to the courts of past

Where we had witnessed enormous feats

But the man there said the tennis wouldn't play

And in the cities, his fans were lost

The scribes wrote not and the players stopped

Not a racquet was taken

The ball boys all were broken

And the three men we admire most

Federer, Roger, and the only GOAT

They caught the last train for the coast

The day the tennis died

They started  singing

Bye-bye  dear gem of a guy

Rode our bike to Basel

Where we saw a crying Nadal

We, good old boys, were singing along

Singing, this is the end of it all

This is the end of it all

They were singing

Bye-bye  dear gem of a guy

Rode our bike to Basel

Where we saw a crying Nadal

We, good old boys, were singing along

Singing, this is the end of it all

This is the end of it all

  1. This was in draft mode for the longest period I remember of any of my blogposts. Was worth it in the end, as my namesake Arun Krishnamoorthy was kind enough to read my draft and suggest pertinent changes. If this reads any better, easy on the rhyme, bulk of the credit goes to Arun. The blame, if any, shall rest only on my shoulders.
